Home Run Derby bracket: Alonso-J-Rod rematch highlights 1st-round matchups
Major League Baseball announced the final participant and full bracket for next week's Home Run Derby at T-Mobile Park.
Texas Rangers slugger Adolis Garcia was revealed as the final member of the eight-player Derby field Wednesday. Garcia, 30, will take part in his first Home Run Derby. He entered play Wednesday with 21 homers and a major league-leading 69 RBIs.
Seeding for next Monday's event was determined by home run totals at the end of Tuesday's games. Here's a look at the full bracket:
Seed | Player | Team | 2023 HRs |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Luis Robert Jr. | White Sox | 25 |
8 | Adley Rutschman | Orioles | 11 |
Robert, the first White Sox slugger to take part in the derby since Todd Frazier in 2016, sits second in the AL in homers after a red-hot June. He'll go up against Rutschman, who's trying to beat the odds and become the first catcher to win a derby, as well as the first switch-hitter to win one outright.
Seed | Player | Team | 2023 HRs |
---|---|---|---|
2 | Pete Alonso | Mets | 25 |
7 | Julio Rodriguez | Mariners | 13 |
The most highly anticipated first-round pairing is a rematch of last year's semifinals. Rodriguez's star was born when he upset Alonso at Dodger Stadium last July, and now he gets to try and take down the Polar Bear again in front of his hometown fans. Alonso, meanwhile, is in his element when the derby gets going, having hit 174 bombs over the last three events while winning twice. He's trying to join Ken Griffey Jr. as the second three-time derby champion.
Seed | Player | Team | 2023 HRs |
---|---|---|---|
3 | Mookie Betts | Dodgers | 23 |
6 | Vladimir Guerrero Jr. | Blue Jays | 13 |
Betts has plenty of power, with 23 homers over his first 82 games this year. But this is also new ground for the former MVP, as it's his first time swinging in a derby. He'll go up against Guerrero, who's 10 back of Betts on the homer leaderboards but has derby experience. Guerrero put on a show in the 2019 contest as a rookie, ultimately falling to Alonso in the final.
Seed | Player | Team | 2023 HRs |
---|---|---|---|
4 | Adolis Garcia | Rangers | 21 |
5 | Randy Arozarena | Rays | 16 |
A couple of first-timers who happen to be good friends will battle in the 4-5 matchup. Garcia gives the Rangers a derby participant for the third straight year, and he'll look to become Texas' first champion since Juan Gonzalez way back in 1993. Arozarena seems built for this event, as he often ups his game when the lights are brightest. He's the first Rays participant in the derby since 2009.
The winner of this year's Derby will receive a special Mariners-themed championship chain.
