The San Diego Padres placed third baseman Manny Machado on the injured list with a left hand fracture, the team announced Friday.
It's the first time the six-time All-Star has been placed on the IL since 2014.
Machado sustained the hand injury after being hit by a pitch during Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals.
The 30-year-old is off to a slow start this season after finishing second in NL MVP voting last year. Machado's slashing .231/.282/.372 with a career-worst 83 OPS+ through 40 contests.
The Padres recalled utility player Brandon Dixon to take Machado's place on the active roster.
