The New York Yankees placed star outfielder Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list with a right hip strain, the club announced Monday.

Judge's IL stint is retroactive to April 28. New York recalled outfielder Franchy Cordero from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

Judge hasn't played since Thursday, when the Yankees removed him from the game at Texas after two at-bats because of hip discomfort. The 31-year-old said the hip issue stemmed from an awkward slide he made during a contest earlier in the week against the Minnesota Twins.

While it's not clear how long he'll be sidelined, manager Aaron Boone hinted Monday that an IL stint for Judge would likely be more for precautionary reasons than anything serious.

"We don't want to put him in a position to where he goes out and compromises somewhere else, and the injury becomes something else or worse. That's the biggest thing," Boone told reporters shortly before the club placed Judg on the IL, according to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. "He's feeling pretty good, and his recovery has been good each and every day. And the injury is minor, but it's like, we're playing the long game here. ... We want to make an honest assessment of where we think he's at (with) it."

This is Judge's first stint on the IL since missing time during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign due to a stress fracture in his ribs.

Judge appeared in a career-high 157 games last season en route to winning the AL MVP.

The four-time All-Star is hitting .261 with an .863 OPS and six home runs over 26 contests in 2023.
