The San Diego Padres and Manny Machado are still discussing a contract extension even though the Feb. 16 deadline imposed by the superstar third baseman and his agent to reach a deal has passed, sources told Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

Machado, who plans to opt out of his contract at the end of this season, didn't rule out the possibility of a new extension.

"Deadlines are deadlines," the 2022 NL MVP runner-up said Friday. "But they know where I stand. The opportunity will arise if it comes to that. You know, nothing's out of question. Obviously, they know how much San Diego means to me and what I want to be here.

"At the end of the day, they knew exactly where I was when that deadline was set. And we'll see what happens. Our main focus right now is playing baseball. We'll see."

The Padres reportedly offered Machado a five-year extension worth $21 million per season two days before the Feb. 16 deadline.

Team owner Peter Seidler has said the six-time All-Star is a "top priority" and that he wants the 30-year-old to be in San Diego for a "long time."

Machado has $180 million over six years left on a 10-year, $300-million pact he inked in February 2019. He owns a .280/.352/.504 slash line with 108 homers and 340 RBIs over four years with the Padres.
