Yankees' Carpenter fractures foot on foul ball

New York Yankees veteran slugger Matt Carpenter suffered a left foot fracture during Monday night's 9-4 victory against the Seattle Mariners.

Carpenter suffered the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot during a first-inning at-bat against starter Logan Gilbert.

The 36-year-old finished the at-bat, striking out swinging. In the third inning, speedy outfielder Tim Locastro pinch hit for the designated hitter.

New York placed Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Tuesday and recalled outfielder Miguel Andujar.

Carpenter is hopeful he'll only miss a month, but a timeline won't be determined until he visits a foot specialist, according to Tim Booth of The Associated Press.

"I don't want to say a number because I just don't know, but I'm holding out hope that it'll be a situation where I could come back in the middle of September and can contribute towards a stretch run," Carpenter said. "So we'll see. ... My mindset is that I'll be back."

The three-time All-Star has played a pivotal role for the first-place Yankees, hitting .307/.414/.732 with 15 homers and 37 RBIs over 46 games entering Monday's contest.

Carpenter's injury comes at the end of a five-game skid for the Bronx Bombers, who are also without first baseman Anthony Rizzo and DH Giancarlo Stanton. Rizzo isn't on the injured list but has been sitting out since Aug. 3 with a back ailment. Stanton is sidelined with Achilles tendonitis.

New York signed Carpenter as a free agent in late May after he spent some time in the Texas Rangers' minor-league system. The former Silver Slugger previously spent 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, leading the National League in doubles on two separate occasions but struggling over his final two campaigns, authoring a .605 OPS (70 OPS+).
