The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned shortstop Oneil Cruz to Triple-A, the club announced Tuesday.
Cruz, who's the Pirates' top prospect and one of the favorites to win NL Rookie of the Year, slashed .333/.333/.733 with two homers and five hits in 15 at-bats across five Cactus League games this spring.
The new collective bargaining agreement was supposed to address service-time manipulation. A team will now receive an additional draft pick if a prospect who was on the Opening Day roster finishes top-three in Rookie of the Year voting or top-five for MVP or Cy Young voting.
The top two Rookie of the Year finalists also get a full year of service time under the new CBA.
