New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was involved in a car accident in Tampa on Sunday, which he described as "brutal" after his vehicle flipped over three times.

Alonso’s wife, Haley, posted a video of the aftermath of the accident on her Instagram:

"Yesterday, I got in a really brutal car accident," Alonso told reporters, including the New York Daily News' Deesha Thosar, on Monday.

"Yesterday was a real close experience to death. My car flipped over probably about three times. Guy ran a red light, T-boned me, and to me, I'm just really thankful to be alive. I'm really thankful that I'm healthy. Very thankful to be here. Anything can happen at any given moment."

Alonso said the wreckage was so bad that he had to kick through his windshield to get out of his vehicle.

The Mets slugger said everyone involved in the accident is OK, and he will be ready to go for full spring training activities on Tuesday.
