Marlins trade Alfaro to Padres
The Miami Marlins traded catcher Jorge Alfaro to the San Diego Padres for cash considerations or a player to be named later, the teams announced Tuesday.
Alfaro was entering his second offseason of arbitration eligibility and projects to earn $2.7 million in 2022. The move was made in the waning moments of the deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players.
The Marlins acquired 2021 Gold Glove catcher Jacob Stallings from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, making Alfaro somewhat redundant.
Over 92 games last year, Alfaro hit .244/.283/.342 with four homers and eight stolen bases.
Alfaro spent three seasons with the Marlins after the team acquired him from the Philadelphia Phillies as part of the return in the J.T. Realmuto trade. Alfaro owns a career .707 OPS (88 OPS+).
The 28-year-old joins a group of backstops in San Diego led by Austin Nola, Victor Caratini, and top prospect Luis Campusano.
