Brewers' Cain 'given up on replay' after costly call vs. Royals

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a close contest to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, and yet another controversial replay review call at home plate may be to blame.

With the game in a scoreless tie during the eighth inning, Andrew Benintendi hit a single to right that sent Whit Merrifield racing home from second base. Brewers right fielder Avisail Garcia threw home on the play, and Omar Narvaez made the tag on Merrifield's left leg. Narvaez quickly celebrated as though he had secured the inning-ending out, but home plate umpire Brian Gorman ruled Merrifield safe.

After a review, the call on the field was upheld.

The Royals tacked on a second run in the inning en route to a 2-0 victory.

"I've given up on replay," Lorenzo Cain said following the game, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Brewers' star outfielder added that MLB has all the angles yet too frequently makes the incorrect call.

Gorman ejected Garcia in the ninth inning for arguing a checked-swing strike call, and Brewers manager Craig Counsell was subsequently tossed for arguing Garcia's ejection.

"What's wrong with showing emotion?" Counsell posited postgame, according to Haudricourt.
