Freeman hasn't talked extension with Braves: 'I don't like distractions'

Freddie Freeman is ready to play out the season and worry about his future later.

The reigning National League MVP said Tuesday that there haven't been recent talks with the Atlanta Braves about a contract extension, according to Jeff Schultz of The Athletic.

Freeman is scheduled to become a free agent this winter when his eight-year, $135-million contract expires. He spoke in October about wanting to re-sign with the Braves; president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has also expressed his desire to keep the 31-year-old first baseman in Atlanta.

Though he now appears ready to at least test the market in the offseason, Freeman isn't worried about the ramifications of leaving his future unknown for the rest of the year.

"(I have) no concern," he said. "I don't know if we can even talk right now. That would be a distraction and I don't like distractions. My main focus is the game tonight and I don't think there's going to be much talking any time soon."

Freeman hit .341/.462/.640 with 13 homers, 53 RBIs, and a major-league leading 23 doubles and 51 runs scored during last year's MVP campaign. He's off to a good start in 2021, sporting a .930 OPS with five homers, 10 RBIs, and an NL-best 14 walks through his first 16 games.
