Jon Berti stumbled his way into history, making the New York Mets look very foolish along the way.

In one of the most bizarre plays in recent memory, the Miami Marlins utility man stole three bases in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game at Citi Field. After getting to third, Berti waited out Mets catcher Ali Sanchez, broke as Sanchez tossed the ball back to the pitcher, and still made it in safely despite stumbling and nearly crawling to home plate.

The Mets replaced Sanchez, who was making his first major-league start, with a pinch hitter in the next half-inning.

Berti's bizarre steal of home marked the 54th time in MLB history - and just the fifth time this century - that a player stole all three bases in the same inning, according to Baseball Almanac. He's the first Marlins player to accomplish the rare feat.

Miami shut out the Mets in both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader at Citi Field.
