D-Backs' Avila hits IL after hurting quad during HR trot
Most jogs around the bases after hitting a home run end without any consequence, but don't tell that to Alex Avila.
The Arizona Diamondbacks catcher was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a strained left quadriceps that he somehow suffered during a home-run trot.
Avila felt the injury as he rounded first following his solo shot off Eduardo Nunez during the D-Backs' 15-8 win on Friday over the Boston Red Sox.
While getting hurt doing such a normal baseball activity might be odd, his injury doesn't seem serious and the D-Backs aren't expecting him to miss much time.
"He was gearing up to get to second base, and when he saw it went over the fence he kind of geared down and felt it grab," manager Torey Lovullo told the Associated Press. "We don't think it is going to be anything that is too lengthy."
The 32-year-old is hitting .333/.524/.800 with a pair of homers through his first six games of 2019.
Arizona recalled utility man Tim Locastro from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move before Sunday's game, meaning the team will only carry two catchers while Avila is on the IL.
