Twins' Polanco records 2019's 1st cycle, and earliest ever by date

Minnesota Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco was unstoppable Friday night at Citizens Bank Park, needing just four at-bats to complete MLB's first cycle of 2019.

Polanco finished the feat in impressive fashion with a seventh-inning double off Philadelphia Phillies reliever Adam Morgan.

His other three hits came off Phillies starter Nick Pivetta. Polanco tripled in the first inning, lined a single in the third, and cracked a solo homer to lead off the fifth.

Thanks to a ninth-inning single, he finished the night a perfect 5-for-5 with a run scored and RBI, while increasing his 2019 slash line to .423/.483/.808.

Polanco's cycle was only the second since 1908 to be recorded while collecting just a single RBI and run scored, joining Giants Hall of Famer Mel Ott (1929), per Baseball-Reference.

The 25-year-old is the 11th Twins player to hit for the cycle since the franchise moved to Minnesota in 1961 (the 15th when including the Washington Senators), and the first Twin to do so since Michael Cuddyer in 2009.

"For him and a player of that caliber, I'm not surprised to see him do it," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com. "It was very cool to be a part of just as a spectator."

Polanco's cycle is also the earliest by date in baseball history, according to Stats.com. The previous record belonged to the Nationals' Brad Wilkerson, who hit for the cycle on April 6, 2005. Coincidentally, Wilkerson's early-April cycle also came in Philadelphia, and it had been the most recent cycle given up by the Phillies.

Despite Polanco's historic evening, the Twins lost Friday's game 10-4.
