Mat Latos ordered to stay away from ex-girlfriend after alleged abuse
Mat Latos, who pitched for eight different teams across nine seasons in Major League Baseball, has been issued a restraining order from a judge to stay at least 500 feet away from his ex-girlfriend after he made violent threats toward her, according to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports.
Latos' ex-girlfriend, who wasn't named, went to authorities in Florida to report several incidents of emotional and physical abuse by her former partner, dating back to 2017.
The court documents state the first incident occurred in September 2017 when an angered Latos flipped over a bed while the woman was still on it. He then backed her into a wall and threatened to kill her.
"He tackled me to the floor, picked me up and slammed me on the couch where he got on top of me pressing his forearm on my throat," the woman said, according to the documents.
Additionally, the woman said that between January 2018 and August 2018, Latos was violent with her on three other occasions. In two separate incidents, Latos locked her in a closet and slashed her car's tires with a knife.
She said the restraining order was filed because she fears for her life and that Latos owns "multiple guns," according to the report, which also states the order was granted on Aug. 28 and has been extended until October when the case is due back in court.
Between 2009-2017, the 30-year-old Latos won 71 games and made 197 appearances in the bigs. He last played in the majors for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017.
