Yankees were forced to sleep in Dulles Airport on Wednesday

Sometimes, travel plans go awry, and the New York Yankees found this out the hard way on Wednesday night.

The Yankees' week in Washington, D.C., was not fun even before Wednesday's travel mishap. After seeing their entire two-game set against the Nationals was washed out - Tuesday's game suspended in the sixth with the score tied 3-3, and Wednesday was rained out - the team left to fly off to better weather in Kansas City.

Except that their plane, supposed to leave Washington around 10 p.m. ET, never took off due to mechanical issues and storms in the capital area, leaving their travel plans in flux. That forced the entire Yankees team to spend the night sleeping inside Dulles International Airport while waiting for the OK to get in the air.

General manager Brian Cashman told Newsday's Erik Boland that many Yankees players and coaches spent their nights sleeping on chairs in the airport's concourse, just like many other weary travelers, while others boarded the team plane to sleep there.

Fortunately for all involved, the Yankees were able to take off Thursday morning and reached Kansas City with no further mishaps ahead of their series against the Royals that begins on Friday.

Here's hoping that when the Yankees next board a plane their pilots will actually have clearance for take-off.
