Once a Yankee, always a Yankee.
Don Mattingly was unable to attend Derek Jeter's number retirement ceremony Sunday thanks to his duties as manager of the Miami Marlins, but that wasn't going to stop the onetime Yankees captain from saluting Jeter as the shortstop was inducted into Monument Park. Mattingly's greetings were played on the Yankee Stadium jumbotron and received a rousing ovation from the Bronx faithful.
Jeter and Mattingly were only teammates in New York for one season, in 1995 - Jeter played 15 games that year, while Mattingly was in his final season - but the two are connected in Yankee lore. Both men served as captains of the Yankees, with Mattingly's stint preceding Jeter's.
In an interesting twist, Jeter could become Mattingly's boss in Miami by the end of this season, as the future Hall of Famer's ownership group is reportedly a finalist to purchase the Marlins.
Mattingly collected 2,153 hits, nine Gold Gloves, and the 1985 AL MVP during his 14-year career with the Yankees from 1982-95. Always a fan favorite in New York, he became a member of Monument Park and had his No. 23 retired by the club in 1997.
