Ortiz officially retires from baseball
David Ortiz's career has officially come to an end.
With the deadline for teams to submit their 40-man roster this Friday, Ortiz was officially removed by the Boston Red Sox, becoming an inactive player in the process, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne.
Ortiz had his $17.2-million option for the 2017 season exercised by the Red Sox two weeks ago, although it was done to prevent the slugger from signing with a different team if he decided to change his mind.
He was only going to make the money if he played in 2017.
Ortiz went out with a bang, posting the highest OPS (1.021) in all of baseball, while hitting .315/.401/.620 with 38 home runs, 48 doubles, and 127 RBIs.
The 40-year-old Dominican slugger retires from Major League Baseball after 20 seasons in the big leagues, in which he hit .286/.380/.552 with 541 home runs, 632 doubles, and 1,768 RBIs.
He was a 10-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger winner, and three-time World Series champion.
