Seager ties Dodgers' shortstop HR record
Corey Seager added to his award-worthy campaign Monday with one thunderous blast into history.
With his fifth-inning homer off Reds pitcher Josh Smith - Seager's 22nd of the season - the Los Angeles Dodgers' star rookie matched Glenn Wright's franchise record for most home runs in a season by a shortstop.
Seager's two-run shot was the third of four homers hit during the Dodgers' six-run fifth, the first time they've deep that many times in an inning since September 2006 against the Padres. The outburst included back-to-back homers from outfielder Andrew Toles and third baseman Rob Segedin - the first longballs of their careers.
Seager, the consensus front-runner for National League Rookie of the Year and a contender for MVP, leads all shortstops with 6.2 wins above replacement while his 22 homers rank second behind the Rockies' Trevor Story among first-year players. The 22-year-old Seager entered Monday batting .316/.370/.531 over 119 games.
