Less than 24 hours after being helped off the field with a shin injury, David Ortiz was back in the lineup Thursday doing what he does best: Defying all odds.
The retiring Boston Red Sox slugger continued his improbable farewell campaign during the first inning of A-Rod's Fenway farewell, smacking a double down the right field line to pass Hall of Famer Dave Winfield for the most extra-base hits in a season for players aged 40 or older.

Player | Year | Age | Team | XHB | 2B | 3B | HR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
David Ortiz | 2016 | 40 | BOS | 63 | 37 | 1 | 25 |
Dave Winfield | 1992 | 40 | TOR | 62 | 33 | 3 | 26 |
Honus Wagner | 1915 | 41 | PIT | 55 | 32 | 17 | 6 |
Craig Biggio | 2006 | 40 | HOU | 54 | 33 | 0 | 21 |
Darrell Evans | 1987 | 40 | DET | 54 | 20 | 0 | 24 |
The ground-rule double - Ortiz's major-league leading 37th two-bagger of the season - increased his extra-base hit total to 63, one more than Winfield recorded for Toronto in 1992 (33 doubles, 26 homers, and three triples).
