Less than 24 hours after being helped off the field with a shin injury, David Ortiz was back in the lineup Thursday doing what he does best: Defying all odds.

The retiring Boston Red Sox slugger continued his improbable farewell campaign during the first inning of A-Rod's Fenway farewell, smacking a double down the right field line to pass Hall of Famer Dave Winfield for the most extra-base hits in a season for players aged 40 or older.

Via Baseball-Reference:

Player Year Age Team XHB 2B 3B HR
David Ortiz 2016 40 BOS 63 37 1 25
Dave Winfield 1992 40 TOR 62 33 3 26
Honus Wagner 1915 41 PIT 55 32 17 6
Craig Biggio 2006 40 HOU 54 33 0 21
Darrell Evans 1987 40 DET 54 20 0 24

The ground-rule double - Ortiz's major-league leading 37th two-bagger of the season - increased his extra-base hit total to 63, one more than Winfield recorded for Toronto in 1992 (33 doubles, 26 homers, and three triples).
