It took a while, but the Washington Nationals made history Sunday.
Washington played into the 18th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, making it the franchise's longest regular season game since moving to D.C. They came close in 1992, when, as the Montreal Expos, they played 17 innings against the Chicago Cubs.
The Nationals sent the game into extras thanks to Daniel Murphy, who belted a pinch-hit solo home run into the right-field stands off Pirates closer Mark Melancon in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.
Unfortunately, they'd lose the contest 2-1 in the 18th inning, after Starling Marte put the Pirates on top with a solo home run.
