Report: Braves to sign No. 3 pick Ian Anderson under slot
The Atlanta Braves have reportedly agreed to terms with high school right-hander Ian Anderson, the third overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, on an entry contract worth approximately $4 million, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The contract would come in under the pick's allotted slot value of $6,510,800, netting Atlanta a savings of approximately $2.5 million.
Heyman also noted that Anderson won't be signing his deal until he graduates from high school.
Anderson, a product of Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, N.Y., was ranked as the 13th overall draft prospect by MLB Pipeline, which may have contributed to his signing for under the slot value. The Vanderbilt commit posted a 0.66 ERA and 91 strikeouts over 53 1/3 innings in 2015, and was named Baseball America's 2015 High School Pitcher of the Year.
The Braves signed three additional draft picks - competitive balance round A choice Joey Wentz, second-round pick Kyle Muller, and third-rounder Drew Harrington - for above their respective slot values, likely thanks to their below-slot agreement with Anderson.
