The timing of Francisco Cervelli's broken hand came at an awkward moment, and he knows it.

Talking to reporters for the first time since breaking his hand on June 10 after following through on a swing, the Pittsburgh Pirates catcher said he's "embarrassed" he suffered the injury less than a month after signing the biggest contract of his career.

"It's a little bit of a nightmare," Cervelli told reporters. "I feel a little embarrassed because of the confidence they showed me with the contract and everything."

At the end of May, the Pirates signed Cervelli to a three-year, $31-million deal through the 2019 campaign. Now, he's expected to miss at least three more weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his left hand.

"I knew something was wrong," Cervelli said. "I heard something pop in there. I didn't know it was a bone.

"They're (trainers) going to get me back really quick. Right now, I've got to stay focused on getting healthy so I can help my team."

This season, Cervelli is batting .257/.373/.293 in 49 games and has yet to hit a home run.
