Athletics' Bassitt diagnosed with partial UCL tear
Oakland Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt has been diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, manager Bob Melvin told reporters Saturday.
Melvin said that while Tommy John surgery is a possibility, the 27-year-old will go for a second opinion to see if it's needed. Bassitt elaborated further, telling Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that test results didn't give a clear answer about whether the procedure is required.
Bassitt was placed on the disabled list with what was called an elbow strain after allowing seven runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Tigers on Thursday. After that game, he told reporters that he couldn't throw any of his breaking pitches.
Right-hander Jesse Hahn was recalled from Triple-A Nashville after Friday's game to take Bassitt's place in the rotation, and will start Saturday against Houston.
