Atletico's Fernando Torres misses training with knee concern
Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres was forced to miss a training session Tuesday with a knee injury suffered during a weekend defeat of Valencia.
Torres showed glimpses of his old self in the victory over Gary Neville's lot, scoring Atletico's second goal in a vital 3-1 win, to keep pace with league leaders Barcelona.
The result extends Atletico's unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions, but it may have come at a cost.
"Fernando Torres was not able to train with the rest of his teammates in the first session of the week," a statement on the club's website read.
Torres, 31, came on in the 63rd minute for Argentine defensive mid Matias Kranevitter, and scored nine minutes later before leaving the pitch in noticeable discomfort after the final whistle.
"After the fixture against Valencia, Atletico's striker (Torres) felt discomfort in his right knee. He underwent diagnostic imaging tests (MRI) in Majadahonda's Fremap Clinic, and the medical report of Fernando Torres indicates that he is suffering a traumatic injury to the right knee that has caused swelling and pain.
"He will undergo medical and physical therapy treatment."
Looking to keep Barcelona within sight - with Diego Simeone's men sitting second, eight points adrift of the Catalans and four ahead of rivals Real Madrid - Atletico will welcome Deportivo La Coruna to the Vincente Calderon on Saturday.
