Sevilla scores trio of spirited goals to hand Real Madrid 1st loss
To the delight of those in attendance at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Sevilla's potential finally came to fruition in a comprehensive victory over Real Madrid.
The twice-consecutive Europa League champions overcame a stuttering start to their campaign, both in La Liga and in Champions League, to beat Real 3-2 in Sunday's late fixture.
Ciro Immobile's tight-angled, first-half finish canceled out a dazzling bicycle kick from an injured Sergio Ramos to send the match to the interval tied, though the second half was where Sevilla's midfield ran rampant.
Argentine international Ever Banega capped a brilliant spell of passing from the home side to calmly slot home Sevilla's second in the 61st minute, courtesy of some deft passing from summer signing Yevhen Konoplyanka.
The match was put out of reach 13 minutes later when substitute striker Fernando Llorente leaped unmarked to head a clinical finish past Real second-choice, shot-stopper Kiko Casilla.
James Rodriguez fired home a consolation goal for the visitors moments before the final whistle, though the scoreline hardly reflects the efforts of Sevilla, who was by far the better side Sunday.
The win propels Sevilla to 10th in the table, while the loss is the first for Rafa Benitez's side in all competitions this year, the last club in Europe's top-five leagues to lay claim to that honour.
