Malaga's Weligton: I grabbed Messi by the throat for calling me a 'son of a b----'
Malaga held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw Wednesday evening, but the impressive result has been overshadowed somewhat by an unseemly incident late in the contest involving Lionel Messi and Weligton.
The Malaga defender was captured on camera putting his hand around the throat of the Argentine star after an altercation in the penalty area, but says his response was in reaction to an insult hurled his way by his illustrious peer.
ESPN FC has the details:
"A minute before Messi tried to play a one-two, I tried to block him with my arm," Weligton told Cadena SER. "He thought I caught him in the face, but it was by accident. You can see from the images. He got angry and came at me, calling me a 'son of a bitch.' That was when I caught him by the throat."
The Barcelona superstar clearly says something to the Brazilian, but no one will likely ever know exactly what it was.
Regardless of any possible slur, Weligton didn't exactly handle the situation well, and was lucky to escape the ordeal with just a yellow card.
