Karim Benzema's fifth league goal of the season was enough to help guide Real Madrid to a 1-0 victory over Sevilla on Sunday at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

With 20 minutes gone in a frenetic second half that largely benefited the visitors, Benzema soared to head Dani Carvajal's floating cross beyond Sevilla shot-stopper Tomas Vaclik.

The goal was Benzema's ninth headed tally of the calendar year, the highest return in Europe's top-five leagues, and his fifth in five outings to join Villarreal's Gerard Moreno atop the Spanish scoring charts.

Eden Hazard impressed during his first La Liga start for Real Madrid following a €100-million move from Chelsea in the summer. The Belgian made an immediate impact, registering Real's first shot on target in 125 minutes on the heels of the drab midweek display at Paris Saint-Germain.

Lucas Ocampos enjoyed a stellar evening for the hosts while making penetrative runs down the left flank, though Sevilla failed to register an effort on target despite out-shooting Los Blancos 9-7.

The result sees Julen Lopetegui's former side vault his current team with its second successive league win to go joint-top of La Liga with Athletic on 11 points. Sevilla are one of four clubs sitting a point adrift.
