FIFA gamer learns he spent $10K on Ultimate Team in 2 years
A FIFA gamer from the UK has vowed to improve his spending methods after discovering he dropped a whopping $10,000 playing Ultimate Team.
Michael (he requested that his last name not be published) told Wesley Yin-Poole of Eurogamer that he found out about his purchases through the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law. He submitted a GDPR request to Electronic Arts on May 25, and a month later, received two PDF files that were over 100 pages long each.
Among the FIFA 16, 17, and 18 data provided by EA was the amount of real world money Michael spent on FIFA Points. He said he was "gobsmacked" to learn he'd spent $10,010 in two years, though it apparently didn't put too big of a dent in his wallet.
"Myself and my fiancee are fortunate to have a healthy disposable income, so this kind of amount wouldn't have caused a strain on us financially," he said. "I do, however, have the utmost sympathy for those in a position of low income who may also be or become addicted to buying loot boxes."
Eurogamer reviewed Michael's spending data, and believes he may have actually spent $16,154 over the past two years.
"If anything, the data EA has provided me has made me realize that FIFA Points are just not worth it and $10,000 will be better spent over the next two years," Michael said.
