Atletico Madrid continues to hold out hope that Diego Costa will return before the transfer window closes.

Club president Enrique Cerezo said he's "optimistic" over Atletico's odds of reaching an agreement with Chelsea that would see Costa, who's been on a self-imposed exile in Brazil after allegedly being told he wasn't in the team's plans for the upcoming season, return to the club that sold him for £32 million in 2014.

Chelsea's valuation of Costa has been a sticking point in negotiations, but Cerezo remains positive that a deal can be completed before La Liga's transfer window closes Friday - over 24 hours after the English deadline that prohibits clubs from completing deals for incoming players after 11 p.m. Thursday.

"He (Costa) has a contract with another club, it’s a complicated matter," Cerezo told reporters, as translated by Matt Law of The Telegraph.

"We are taking things with ease. As long as Chelsea do not agree to his transfer, Costa will be (a) Chelsea (player).

"Am I pessimistic or optimistic regarding the arrival of Costa? I am always optimistic."

Atletico's transfer embargo would prohibit Costa from joining the Spanish side, but the 28-year-old would be allowed to sign with Los Rojiblancos and subsequently join another team on loan until January when the ban ends.

The Telegraph previously reported that a successful bid could be worth £40 million plus "significant" add-ons.

Costa has previously drawn interest from Everton, whose manager, Ronald Koeman, said the forward would receive a "warm welcome" if he were to join.

Marseille and AS Monaco have also been linked to Costa, who previously claimed that Chelsea is treating him like a criminal and asked that the Premier League side lower its asking price for him.
