Neymar loses appeal, will stand trial on corruption charges for Barcelona move
Barcelona star Neymar is reportedly set to stand trial on corruption charges related to his 2013 move to La Liga after losing his final appeal case on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
Appeals were also rejected by Barcelona, Santos, and the company run by Neymar's parents, and all parties will stand trial after a complaint issued by a Brazilian investment group alleged it did not receive the full compensation agreed upon because of unclear transfer fee disclosures.
Prosecutors are looking for a two-year prison sentence for Neymar and his father on charges of corruption. The two are unlikely to actually spend any time in jail though, as Spanish law does not issue jail time to those with less than two-year sentences or first-time offenders in this type of case.
Prosecutors are also seeking a fine of around €9.5 million from Neymar and his father, €8.5 million from Barcelona, and €6.5 million from Santos.
