Barcelona set a new record in La Liga courtesy of a 2-1 win over Valencia on Saturday, with the Catalan outfit now going undefeated in 39 straight matches. As such, the Blaugrana overtake Real Sociedad's 38-match unbeaten run, which was set in the 1979-80 season.

Goals from Luis Suarez in the first half and Samuel Umtiti in the second gave Ernesto Valverde's side its 25th win of the season, which came under a slight threat as Dani Parejo scored a late penalty to halve Barcelona's lead.

But Barcelona quickly moved past the spot-kick and held onto the result, which sees the team reach yet another La Liga milestone in dominance.

Real Sociedad kicked off its own 38-match unbeaten run in April of the 1978-79 La Liga campaign, and saw it come to an end in May 1980 in the following season, with a 2-1 loss to a nine-man Sevilla side.

As Lionel Messi and Co. close in on yet another La Liga title, Barcelona can further extend this streak down the final stretch of the season, where beatable opponents like Celta Vigo, Deportivo La Coruna, Villarreal, and Levante await.

But, the Blaugrana will also need to overcome or stave off bitter rival Real Madrid in an El Clasico meeting on May 6, before fittingly ending the season against Real Sociedad on May 20.
