Lavezzi: I chose China over Inter, Manchester United, Chelsea
Ezequiel Lavezzi said he turned down a host of European giants in favour of a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League.
The Argentinian followed several other high-profile players to the Far East last month, and opted to join Hebei China Fortune where he'll be teammates with Gervinho, Stephane Mbia, and Gael Kakuta.
"I could have signed for Inter (Milan), Chelsea, or Manchester United," Lavezzi told local media after being unveiled by his new club. "But I made the decision to go to China. It's an important choice for my career, I'm sure I'll face many challenges here.
"I like the project to develop this club. It was that which convinced me to come to Hebei, as well as the financial aspect. I'm also fascinated by Chinese culture, so to come and play here is definitely an interesting challenge."
Players including Fredy Guarin, Jackson Martinez, and Ramires have recently made the move to China. The trend has left leagues in Europe and North America concerned about the spending power of the Super League, which was brought about by a fresh television deal and president Xi Jinping's ambitions to make the country a significant force in the game.
Lavezzi's departure should concern fans in his homeland, too, as his 48th cap could be his last for Argentina, even with the summer's Copa America Centenario looming.
"It's probable that it's finished," he admitted. "But I already took my decision and from now on I want to give everything for my club."
