Looking to stave off relegation, Newcastle United has continued to stock its cupboards with established players, this time signing Tottenham Hotspur's out-of-favour winger Andros Townsend to a five-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of £12 million.
Townsend, 24, has appeared in only three Premier League matches this season, all as a substitute, paired with three Europa League run-outs and one Capital One Cup match.
"I'm delighted to be here," Townsend said. "Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition. "As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go so I can't wait to get started."
Seemingly far removed from a breakout 2013-14 campaign for Spurs that garnered the London-born attacker an England call-up, Townsend did little to endear himself to manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Townsend will join Newcastle's two other marquee winter signings, Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet, in a revitalized midfield that's certain to provide gaffer Steve McClaren with optimism over the final 15 matches of the top-flight campaign.
