Arsenal's Jack Wilshere set to miss start of season
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere could miss the start of the season due to a right ankle injury, manager Arsene Wenger hinted today after his club's 1-0 Community Shield victory over rival Chelsea.
Speaking to reporters following the match, Wenger addressed his side's fitness concerns.
"Pre-season has gone quite well," he said. "We have no big injuries at the moment apart from Jack Wilshere who we lost yesterday.
"He couldn't play because of an ankle problem he sustained in training."
Arsenal's Premier League campaign kicks off Saturday against West Ham, and based on Wenger's assessment, there's a reasonable chance Wilshere will miss the match for precautionary reasons.
Wilshere has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, including a recurring issue with his left ankle. The England international has been sidelined on six separate occasions with ankle issues, specifically malleolar fractures of the two rounded protuberances on each side of the ankle.
