Report: Man United agree to send Onana on loan to Trabzonspor
Andre Onana could attempt to revive his career in Turkey.
Manchester United have verbally agreed to send the oft-criticized goalkeeper on loan to Trabzonspor, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. It's now left to Onana to decide whether to head to the Black Sea coast or fight for his place in Ruben Amorim's side.
There's no fee or option to buy tied into the potential loan move, The Athletic's Carl Anka and Laurie Whitwell report.
Altay Bayindir has started all three Premier League matches between the sticks for United this season. Onana was given a chance in the League Cup second round against Grimsby Town, but the Cameroonian conceded two goals before losing a drawn-out penalty shootout to the fourth-tier minnows.
Onana's prospects of being United's first-choice goalkeeper this campaign dwindled further when the club completed the deadline-day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial €21-million fee.
The Turkish transfer window closes next Friday, which gives Trabzonspor time to encourage Onana to join them before their trip to Fenerbahce on Sept. 14.
Onana joined United as David De Gea's replacement in a €55-million move from Inter Milan in 2023. He reunited with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. However, his time at the club was soon defined by high-profile errors, leading former midfielder Nemanja Matic to label him as "one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United's history" in April.
The 29-year-old started Cameroon's 3-0 World Cup qualification win over Eswatini on Thursday. The Indomitable Lions will compete in the Africa Cup of Nations beginning in December.
