Manuel Pellegrini is set to kick off his West Ham tenure without two of his most dependable players.

The east London club confirmed Thursday that both Andy Carroll and Winston Reid have suffered setbacks in their respective recoveries from injury, with the two players facing a minimum of an additional three months on the sidelines.

"Andy played and scored in Sunday’s match but is still reporting some discomfort in his ankle and further scans have revealed that he requires some minor surgery to provide more strength and stability to the area," new head of medical Richard Collinge said in a statement.

Carroll's ankle concern saw the towering ponytailed striker miss a chunk of last season, making a scant seven starts for the club, the fewest since he made the West Ham switch in 2012.

Like Carroll, Reid has anchored a veteran spine at the club amid turmoil with the board and instabilities tethered to the move to the London Stadium. Collinge confirmed that the Kiwi's ankle issue has worsened, adding, "Winston has been suffering some swelling around the knee, following the injury that he sustained at Swansea last season, and he too is in need of explorative surgery to clean up the area.

"We have decided that this is the best course of action to ensure that both players have a chance of returning to full fitness as soon as possible."

Former Manchester City boss Pellegrini arrives at West Ham looking to better last season's drab 13th-place finish. To do so, the club has already signed Lukasz Fabianski, Andriy Yarmolenko, Issa Diop, Ryan Fredericks, and Jack Wilshere.
