Argentina, Uruguay announce 2030 World Cup joint bid

South American neighbours Argentina and Uruguay are going ahead with plans to co-host the 2030 World Cup despite anticipated competition from the likes of China.

Argentinian sports secretary Carlos Mac Allister confirmed the joint bid in an interview Wednesday with the Associated Press, adding that the heads of both countries' football federations are all-in on intentions of hosting the quadrennial contest.

Argentina and Uruguay have each hosted the tournament on one occasion and won it twice, with the latter entertaining 12 other nations for the first World Cup in 1930.

Both countries can look to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for guidance, with the five-time winner roundly criticised for building "white elephant" venues that have since gone unused while civic infrastructures crumble.
