Michael Carrick confirmed reports he would extend his 11-year association with Manchester United, signing a new deal which will keep him at Old Trafford for another season, the Red Devils announced Saturday.

His contract, which was due to expire in June, will now run for another 12 months.

"What a fantastic way to finish off the season, with a new trophy in our cabinet," Carrick, who watched from the bench as United won the Europa League earlier this week, said in a statement. "I am delighted that my journey with this great club is going to continue."

The 35-year-old made just 18 Premier League starts for Jose Mourinho's side during the 2016-17 season. By March, he was forced to answer questions over his future at the club, and, although he entertained the idea of joining the Chinese Super League or Major League Soccer, he made it clear he wouldn't represent another English team.

Carrick can now wait another year before making a decision.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Michael over this past season," Mourinho added. "He is one of the true professionals of the game. Not only is he a great footballer, he is also a fantastic human being and a great role model to our younger members of the team."

Carrick has the honour of hosting his own testimonial next Sunday at Old Trafford. Like Wayne Rooney's tribute match last August, Carrick's will raise money for charity.
