Carrick would consider move to China, not another English club

Playing for an English club other than Manchester United is something Michael Carrick could never contemplate, but a move to China or Major League Soccer could compel the soon-to-be free agent in the summer.

The 35-year-old has represented the Red Devils since joining them from Tottenham in 2006, and became one of Sir Alex Ferguson's most trustworthy men in the middle of the park.

His contract with the club expires in June, however, and on the heels of one of his least productive seasons at Old Trafford, the former England international has a difficult decision to make.

"I have had so many good times here that I couldn't play anywhere else in England," Carrick told ESPN FC's Mark Ogden. "I must admit I would find it difficult to play anyone else in this country after playing here. I don't think I could do that.

"I have always wanted to go out at the top, I have felt like that for quite some time now. I want to go out on my terms. That's not me being selfish, I just don't want to go over the hill and fizzle away. I want to go out when I know it's the right time, but it's a tough balance to get, knowing that that is my lot."

Following news that teammate and United captain Wayne Rooney turned down lucrative offers from the Far East, Carrick said his family and not any pay cheque would hold the most sway.

"China? It is one of those questions that is popping up in everyone's minds at the moment, but who knows?" he added.

It is not yet clear whether Carrick will continue playing at all.

In any case, United's vice-captain will have the honour of playing in his own testimonial at Old Trafford on June 4 to commemorate his 11-year association with the club. All the proceeds from the event will go to charities of the player's choosing.

The likes of Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, and Ryan Giggs will line up as part of a side featuring United's 2008 squad, while Carrick will lead out an All-Star team including Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Michael Owen.
