The first Gambian to play Premier League football has extended his stay in the English top flight after Swansea City announced Thursday that Modou Barrow had signed a new three-year contract.

Barrow, 23, joined the south Wales side in 2014 from Swedes Ostersunds FK for a reported fee of £1.5 million on a two-year deal, and after impressing last season, has committed his future to the Swans, the clubs announced on its website.

The deal will keep Barrow at the Liberty Stadium through 2019.

"I'm delighted to have signed a new contract," Barrow told Swansea's website while the club is on its two-match American tour.

"We have a preseason tour of America ahead of us, which will really benefit the squad. There is a real sense of excitement for the new season."

Employed mainly as a super-sub, Barrow made 22 league appearances for Swansea last season, 16 as a substitute, pairing a goal with two assists. The goal in a thrilling 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth handed Barrow a second distinction, as the pacey attacker became the first Gambian to score in the Premier League.

Fellow Gambian Omar Koroma spent two seasons at Portsmouth from 2008-10, but failed to make a single first-team appearance for Pompey.

Dynamic in possession and with a nose for running into channels, Barrow has the penchant to excite with his direct brand of football. "On a personal level, I want to get the fans on their feet. That’s what I want to do when I’m on the ball."
