The attacking midfielder moved to the Etihad Campus from sister club Melbourne City at the end of June, but will now continue his footballing education in West Yorkshire under manager David Wagner.
The 16-time Australia international was a starter against England in a May friendly at Wembley Stadium.
Mooy, 25, has been given the No. 10 shirt at the John Smith's Stadium and will strive to continue the form that saw him set an A-League record 20 assists in the 2015-16 season.
