The Italian moved to the Black Cats from Arsenal in 2013 and has since made 69 appearances, fighting off numerous shot-stoppers - including Costel Pantilimon and Keiren Westwood - for a place between the sticks. He starred toward the end of last season's survival from relegation, pinching clean sheets from West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Arsenal, and Everton.
Manager Sam Allardyce has been quiet in the summer transfer window, with no newcomers for Sunderland so far. Steven Fletcher, Wes Brown, and Danny Graham all left upon the conclusions of their respective contracts.
