Ipswich thrash woeful Sheff Utd for first win

Ipswich secured their first win of the season in style with a 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United to compound the Blades' miserable start on Friday.

Jaden Philogene scored his first career hat-trick, while George Hirst and Jack Clarke were also on target to lift the pressure on Kieran McKenna.

By contrast, Ruben Selles is fighting for his job after six straight defeats to begin his reign as Sheffield United boss.

The decision to part company with Chris Wilder for Selles after narrowly missing out on promotion back to the Premier League last season is looking increasingly misguided.

Ipswich had taken just three points from their opening four Championship games on their return to the second tier.

But the pre-season promotion favourites cruised to their first home win since beating Chelsea in the Premier League in December.

Philogene had only scored three goals in 14 appearances for Ipswich since his £20 million ($27 million) January move from Aston Villa prior to Friday.

But the England under-21 international is a proven performer at Championship level and produced three fine finishes to tear the visitors apart.

Goalkeeper Michael Cooper's woeful attempt to keep out Hirst's tame effort on the hour mark summed up United's night.

Clarke completed the scoring when he picked up a deflection off centre-back Japhet Tanganga to slot the ball home.

Ipswich climb to 11th, while United remain the only side in the division yet to register a point.
