Erling Haaland notched his 50th goal of the season in all competitions for Manchester City with an early penalty during Sunday's 2-1 win at Fulham.
He's the first player from England's top tier to bag a half-century across all competitive club games since Aston Villa's Tom Waring completed a 50-goal season in 1931. West Ham United's Vic Watson smashed 50 in the prior campaign, but the all-time record belongs to Dixie Dean, who scored a remarkable 63 times for Everton during the 1927-28 season.
Haaland's spot-kick also meant he matched the record for most goals in a single Premier League season, moving level with Andy Cole and Alan Shearer's count of 34.
Cole and Shearer reached 34 when the English top-flight campaign was a 42-match slog. The Premier League was reduced from 22 clubs to 20 in 1995, a change which resulted in four fewer matches per team.
Player | Season | Apps | Goals |
---|---|---|---|
Erling Haaland | 2022-23 | 30 | 34 |
Andy Cole | 1993-94 | 40 | 34 |
Alan Shearer | 1994-95 | 42 | 34 |
Haaland broke the record for goals in a 38-game Premier League season during Wednesday's 4-1 rout of title rivals Arsenal, surpassing the previous mark of 32 set by Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in 2017-18.
The 22-year-old Norwegian has six more matches to add to his 2022-23 Premier League tally.
