Kane reportedly out until March after tearing hamstring on New Year's Day
Jose Mourinho expected "bad news," and that's exactly what he got.
Tottenham confirmed Friday that striker Harry Kane tore his left hamstring in Wednesday's loss to Southampton.
The club didn't provide a timetable for his return.
"Our medical staff will continue to review the injury with treatment ongoing," Spurs said in a statement.
However, Kane is expected to be out until at least March, according to The Guardian's David Hytner, who described the injury as a "serious tear." That would leave him out of Spurs' next eight matches, including contests against Liverpool, Manchester City, RB Leipzig, and Chelsea.
The 26-year-old hurt himself while scoring a goal that was eventually disallowed. He was replaced by Erik Lamela after 74 minutes.
Mourinho told reporters earlier Friday that he was pessimistic about Kane's prognosis.
"If you ask me just my feeling - good or bad news - I am more on bad news than good news, that's my feeling," the Portuguese said. "What the player felt, Harry Kane leaving a match, the way he did it, he didn't think twice, it didn't take him two seconds to realize the severity of the situation."
Kane subsequently tweeted: "Heads up. Tough times don't last, tough people do."
Major injuries have interrupted each of his last two seasons. He tore ligaments in his left ankle during the 2018-19 campaign, missing a total of 17 matches.
Heung-Min Son is available to replace Kane in the No. 9 position, having recently served a three-match ban for a red card he received against Chelsea. Lucas Moura has also played there in the past.
