Borussia Dortmund expect Giovanni Reyna to return to first-team training within 14 days after the American avoided a serious thigh injury in Sunday's win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 19-year-old was in tears when he was substituted with the problem after just 30 minutes. Reyna was making his first club start since August after overcoming a long-term hamstring issue.

Reyna suffered the hamstring injury in the United States' World Cup qualifier against El Salvador on Sept. 2. He subsequently missed 10 matches of a congested qualifying schedule for the USMNT.

Gregg Berhalter's side finishes its qualification campaign with matches against Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica between March 24 and 30. The U.S. has a four-point cushion in the race for qualification to the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Though Dortmund were able to share positive news about Reyna's diagnosis, defender Dan-Axel Zagadou was less fortunate. The German club reported the Frenchman will miss "several weeks" after tearing a muscle fiber in his thigh.
