Guerrero scores diving header goal to give Peru slim win over Haiti
It took an hour of action for Peru to find the back of the net but Paolo Guerrero's goal was well worth the wait as Los Incas defeated Haiti 1-0 at CenturyLink Field to kick off the action in Group B of the Copa America Centenario.
Deadlocked at 0-0, Peru pressed and pressed and finally broke down the Hatian back line, Edison Flores whipping in a perfect curling pass for Guerrero to latch onto with a diving header.
Goalkeeper Johnny Placide could do little but watch as the ball sailed past him and the Peruvian players celebrated in front of their fans in the stands at CenturyLink Field.
Peru started the game with plenty of possession but could not find the back of the net in the first half. The Peruvians were pinned back into their own half after scoring the go-ahead goal but defended well and attacked on the counter.
Haiti mustered a late chance with one minute remaining in added time, whipping in a free-kick but heading the ball just wide of goal.
As such, Peru held on for the win, moving to the top of Group B, though potentially only temporarily as fellow Group B competitors Brazil and Ecuador will battle it out soon after the final whistle.
Such an encouraging performance. Players should be proud. Still a lot to play for!! #Haiti ππΉππΉππΉ
