Rafael Dudamel is revolutionising Venezuelan football.

On Thursday, Venezuela's national team gave the country something to cheer about, defeating Uruguay 1-0 at Lincoln Financial Field to remain undefeated at the Copa America Centenario. Venezuela is yet to concede a single goal and is on the brink of qualifying for the tournament's quarter-finals.

Amid rising tension in Venezuela, where a deep economic crisis is resulting in protests over chronic food and medicine shortages, La Vintotino produced an admirable performance against Uruguay. Dudamel's side launched attack after attack and could have won by considerably more if Adalberto Penaranda, the team's 19-year-old virtuoso, had been more selfish in the final third.

The fixture's lone goal came in the 36th minute, when Alejandro Guerra saw that Fernando Muslera was out of position and proceeded to blast a 52.4-yard shot that the Uruguayan 'keeper deflected off the crossbar, only for Salomon Rondon to tap home the rebound.

Venezuela's historic victory is made all the more surprising by 2018 World Cup qualifying, where, in CONMEBOL, La Vinotinto sits dead last while Uruguay is atop the standings. The poor form, however, is down to Noel Sanvincente, the team's previous manager who lost control of the dressing room and whose attacking game plan couldn't be executed by a slow defence.
