Vancouver businessman Amar Doman purchased the BC Lions, the franchise announced Wednesday.

Doman takes over ownership from David Braley's estate. Braley bought the Lions in 1997 and held the team until he died in October 2020. He began seeking potential buyers before his death.

"I'm thrilled and excited by the opportunity before us, to build a winning team on the field, to be a positive force for a better British Columbia off the field, and to provide a great experience for our fans and our partners every step of the journey," Doman said.

"The Lions are part of the fabric of this great province. I'm honored to take on this role because of our team's history. But I'm motivated, most of all, by the future I see ahead for this franchise. I am extremely excited to get started."

Doman owns the Futura Corporation, an asset management and investment firm. He also has around three decades of experience in the lumber and building industry.

The Lions have won six Grey Cups and were most recently crowned champions in 2011. However, declining attendance has led to concerns about the future of the club.

"Amar Doman is exactly the owner that David Braley wanted for the future of the BC Lions, a team he was proud to own and that he deeply loved," said Grant Panchyson, the executor of the late owner's estate.

CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie called the transaction "a great day for British Columbia, for the Lions, and for the Canadian Football League."
