Report: CFL's Eskimos decide to change name
The Edmonton Eskimos have decided to change the team's name, and the official announcement could come as early as next week, sources told TSN's Ryan Rishaug.
The Eskimos previously decided against changing their name, though the club mentioned its intention to increase engagement with the Inuit communities to assess their views.
However, one of Edmonton's biggest sponsors - national car and home insurance company Belairdirect - recently threatened to cut ties with the team if a replacement wasn't found.
"In order for us to move forward and continue on with our partnership with the Edmonton Eskimos, we will need to see concrete action in the near future, including a name change," the company said in a statement.
The Eskimos are set to become the second sports franchise to announce a name change after the recent wave of social and racial injustice protests. In the NFL, Washington officially retired the Redskins name and logo on Monday.
